Prakash Raj Faces Legal Trouble Over Ramayana Remark; BJP Leader Files Complaint for Hurting Hindu Sentiments
Actor Prakash Raj has landed in fresh legal trouble after his remarks referencing the Ramayana triggered controversy and led to formal complaints. The issue has now escalated into a political and legal row, with allegations that his statements hurt religious sentiments.
According to reports, a complaint was filed by BJP leader Bhanu Prakash, who is also associated with the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams board. He accused the actor of making “defamatory and malicious remarks,” claiming that the comments distorted the Ramayana and disrespected Hindu beliefs. In his petition, he urged authorities to initiate legal action not just against Prakash Raj but also against those who allegedly supported or amplified the remarks.
The controversy stems from an appearance by Prakash Raj at the Kerala Literature Festival earlier this year. During a discussion, he narrated a version of a Ramayana-inspired story that was originally performed by a children’s theatre group. The retelling presented characters like Rama, Lakshmana, Ravana, and Shurpanakha in a modern, satirical context, incorporating elements such as payments and GST for humour.
However, critics alleged that this reinterpretation mocked religious figures and hurt sentiments associated with Sanatan Dharma. The complaint further claimed that such remarks could disturb communal harmony and should be examined under laws meant to protect religious sentiments.
The situation intensified when another complaint was filed by advocate Amita Sachdeva, who described the remarks as deliberate and offensive, stating that they caused deep hurt to religious feelings. She also emphasized that insults directed at Hindu deities should not be tolerated.
As the controversy continues to gain traction, authorities are currently reviewing the complaints and considering possible legal action. Meanwhile, Prakash Raj has not issued any official response on the matter so far.
